Resources for Black History Month

 During the month of February, we take the time to explore and recognize the contributions and achievements of African-Americans. Below are a few places to find printable resources to use in your studies.

PBS Education - Ten Black Scientists that Science Teachers Should Know About – You will find lesson plans, activities, videos and more focused on black scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and inventors.


Los Angeles Unified School District - Black History Month Resources – There are downloadable lesson plans and activities based on the movie Hidden Figures as well as lessons African American mathematicians, March on Washington Math, and more.

Mashup Math - 11 Famous African American Mathematicians You Should Know About - Learn about famous mathematicians such as Benjamin Banneker, Fern Hunt, Mark Dean, and others.


Book Units Teacher - Black History Month – 4 sets of foldable cards featuring abolitionists, activists, entertainers, and sports heroes. Each set offers a choice of 3 versions of the cards and a pocket to make to store the cards. 3 Dinosaurs - Black History Pack – Created for children ages 5-8, this 30-page packet includes matching cards, pattern cards, sorting cards, puzzles, writing practice and more.

Black History Month – This website provides a large collection of links to a variety of resources including exhibits and collections, images, audio and video and teaching resources from the Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

National Geographic Kids - African American Heroes –Discover the lives of several Americans who have contributed to the progress of our country. There are other resources available at this sight relating to black history, so be sure to check them out as well using the links at the bottom of that page.
